Semantics and information modelling

Semantic interoperability – information modelling, metadata, terminology, ontology development

Capturing the semantic meaning of business information is essential if data from multiple systems is to be correctly understood, shared and re-used across an enterprise to support business process execution. Enterprise data models representing the business information used by an enterprise, metadata capturing data element semantics and relationships, and the development of a common business terminology are key to achieving semantic interoperability.

Aredian helps develop the data models and implementation strategies required to harmonise data from multiple source systems and provide a unified view on to that data. Our designs account for the business and technical levels of integration, allowing data from multiple systems to be consolidated and used with consistent business semantics.

Aredian can assist enterprise data management projects by helping:

  • Develop information models of business domains (using UML)
  • Develop message schema artefacts from information models (using XML Schema and UN/CEFACT CCTS design principles)
  • Develop ontology models to support ontology-based data integration and represent terminology (using W3C OWL)
  • Develop metadata vocabularies to describe data and support workflow
  • Develop business terminologies and classification schemes
  • Advise and assist in the use of the ISO 11179 Metadata registries (MDR) standard to capture and record data element semantics.
